One of the best ways to accelerate the performance of Windows and applications that consume sufficient computer memory, is to install a hard drive or RAM.
A RAM drive, is a small software that when installed on our computers, creates a virtual drive that uses part of the physical RAM installed on your computer, as if an independent unit. This is the best option to improve performance without making any changes, or add more powerful hardware on your PC.
The speed of the physical RAM installed, is much greater than any hard drive, for example in any modern disk of 7200 rpm, the transmission rate does not exceed 60 MB per second, whereas a DDR2-800 RAM can speeds up to 800 MB / s, more modern even more.
When installing the RAM disk, part of the physical memory is used by Windows as if it were a separate unit.
Obviously, storing the data that we use and the need to access fast enough, so our system will gain efficiency.
Practical uses of the RAM disk or RAM drive
The main uses of a RAM disk is to store data that is accessed frequently, with maximum speed and requiring more bandwidth, there are multiple applications, some examples of how and where to use are:
• For files or virtual memory paging.
• Windows Temporary files.
• Temporary Files in Internet Explorer or another browser.
• Temporary files and cache video editing programs.
• Virtual Disk Photoshop.
• The Google Earth cache.
• 3D games.
• TCP / IP.
Requirements for installing the RAM drive
The main requirement for installing a RAM disk is having enough physical memory is only recommended in case of 1 GB or more but you can install it with 516MB and titrated values according to your needs.
Where to download the software to install the RAM drive
There are several programs that enable a RAM drive on your computer, including Microsoft, but most have compatibility issues with Windows 7 and limitations on the size and amount of memory supported by the unit created.
Dataram is an application that meets all the requirements of the ramdisk, it’s free, compatible with Windows XP, Vista and 7, you can download from the website at the following link.
RAM DISK Installation and Configuration
After installing the program starts the configuration tool, which you will find direct access to: All Programs -> Dataram RAMDisk.
In the Settings tab are the basic parameters of program settings, as shown in the picture.
➔ In Disk Size enter the amount of physical RAM it will use the program always reserves a minimum of 512 MB for the operating system, so you’ll see on the bottom of Disk Size the maximum amount you set.
➔ Select the file system, the most common is FAT32.
➔ Click the Start button to start the RAMDisk and after the progress bar is complete restart Windows to complete the installation.
How to save data from RAM DISK
All RAM disks share the same physical RAM feature, that when you restart or shutdown the system erases all data, but this program gives the possibility that in this case have the option to automatically save the contents RAM disk image to a hard drive on shutdown and reload in Windows startup.
This possibility extends its use to many applications without fear of losing the data, so you have to configure the program as follows.
➔ Back to access the configuration tool.
➔ Choose this time the Load and Save tab, check both boxes as shown in the picture: Load Disk Image at Startup and Shutdown at Save Disk Image.
➔ Enter or choose in the bottom of each, the path where to save the disk image by default shows the C: drive but you can save it to any other location where you are not affected in space.
➔ Start RAM Disk, reboot and you can start using it.
